James & Jennifer Crumbley sentenced in connection to Oxford, Michigan school shooting case

PONTIAC, Mich – James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in connection to the mass shooting at Oxford, Michigan High School on November 30, 2021.

The sentencing, taking place in an Oakland County courtroom, comes after both parents were apprehended over two years ago in a Detroit warehouse following a manhunt. Despite being tried separately, their sentencing will occur jointly, a decision that has drawn considerable attention to the case.

In the lead-up to the sentencing, defense attorneys for the Crumbleys have proposed significantly lighter sentences of fewer than five years for each, citing the time already served and advocating for leniency. Notably, James Crumbley’s defense has suggested a term of 28 to 42 months, while Jennifer Crumbley’s counsel recommends a guideline of 29 to 57 months.

This sentencing hearing is expected to be emotionally charged, with several family members of the victims slated to provide impact statements, reminiscent of the poignant testimonies heard during Ethan Crumbley’s sentencing in December 2023.

Complicating the matter, Jennifer Crumbley has controversially requested to serve her sentence under house arrest, a move that has sparked debate. Both parents have been behind bars since their arrest, experiencing significant pre-trial detention.

Prosecutors, however, are pushing for sterner punishment, recommending a minimum of 10 years imprisonment for each parent. They argue that the Crumbleys have demonstrated a “chilling lack of remorse” and have not fully acknowledged their part in the tragedy.

As the community watches closely, the sentencing of the Crumbleys marks a pivotal moment in addressing accountability and the role of guardians in preventing such devastating events.
