FRANKENMUTH, Mich. — Frankenmuth Mayor Mary Anne Ackerman, who had served the city since her election in 2018, died Saturday, February 24, at Covenant Hospital following a brief battle with cancer, city officials announced. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.
Ackerman, known for her dedication both as the city’s mayor and a lifelong educator, began her tenure as mayor in 2019 after being elected to the City Council. Her commitment to education was evident in her role as the superintendent of the Frankenmuth School District from 2007 to 2016, where she was remembered for her tireless and selfless work towards creating a better world.
The city and its residents expressed their gratitude for Ackerman’s leadership and dedicated service. In a statement, the city conveyed the family’s request for privacy during this difficult time and extended their deepest condolences.
In the interim, Mayor Pro Tem Tom Meyer will assume mayoral duties until an official appointment is made. As a mark of respect, all city flags will be flown at half-staff until Ackerman’s funeral.
The city promised to release further details and information in due course.
