Flint, MI – The Flint community is mourning the loss of City Councilman Eric Mays, who represented the city’s First Ward for three terms. The City of Flint released a statement saying he was known for his bold and courageous advocacy, Mays’ death has left a void in the hearts of many residents and colleagues the city says.

In a statement released by the city, officials expressed their sorrow and extended their deepest sympathies to Mays’ family and friends. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Councilman Eric Mays. His unwavering service to the First Ward and the city at large was marked by a strong presence that will be profoundly missed,” the statement read.
As a mark of respect, the flag at Flint City Hall will be flown at half-staff starting Monday, February 26.

Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley spoke to the magnitude of the loss, describing it as a shock to Mays’ friends, family, and the entire community. “This is a tremendous loss for our community,” Mayor Neeley said. “As we navigate through this difficult time, we ask that the privacy of Councilman Mays’ family be respected. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them.”
The cause of death has not yet been released.

Mays was a controversial figure in Flint who sparred with fellow council members, the mayor, and many others.
Within the past year, Mays has gone viral on TikTok. Mays traveled the country speaking at various events.
Mays was also famous on YouTube for his antics at the city council being featured in highlight videos.
