UVALDE, TX – A grand jury has indicted two former Uvalde school police officers for their handling of the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, which resulted in the deaths of 19 children and two teachers. Two Texas state government sources disclosed the indictments to CNN on Thursday.
The indicted officers are former Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arrendondo and former school police officer Adrian Gonzales. These indictments mark the first criminal charges brought in connection with the tragic school massacre.
Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell informed the Uvalde Leader-News that both officers face felony charges of abandoning and endangering a child. One of the officers was expected to surrender later on Thursday. However, the indictments were not immediately accessible from the Uvalde County District Court clerk’s office.

Brett Cross, the guardian of 10-year-old Uziyah Garcia, one of the victims, revealed that family members of the deceased have been meeting with the DA’s office to discuss the outcomes of the grand jury investigation, which has been ongoing for several months.
Earlier this year, the US Justice Department released a critical report on the law enforcement response to the May 24, 2022, shooting. The report highlighted numerous missed opportunities by officers to reassess their flawed approach during the incident at Robb Elementary School.
According to the report, bursts of gunfire, a teacher’s shooting, and a desperate call from a trapped student should have prompted a more immediate and effective response to stop the bloodshed. Instead, it took 77 minutes from the time the 18-year-old shooter entered the school until he was finally stopped, making it one of the deadliest school shootings in American history.
The Justice Department’s 575-page report, released nearly 20 months after the massacre, points to critical leadership failures among the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.
