During the live broadcast, Swanson showed distressing video footage of the emaciated animal, which he noted was part of the evidence in the ongoing investigation. The dog, along with another similarly neglected canine, was rescued by local authorities after a tip from a vigilant citizen on April 23.
“The brutality you’re going to see is a direct connection to domestic and relational problems, including child abuse,” Swanson said, urging viewers to report any signs of animal mistreatment immediately.
The owner of the dogs, 30-year-old Candace Denson, has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of killing and torturing an animal.
Swanson criticized the legal system for its leniency towards such crimes and emphasized the need for harsher penalties. He connected the abuse of animals to broader patterns of violence within households and communities.
The sheriff called on the community to support local animal control and advocacy efforts, stressing that everyone has a role in protecting animals from abuse.
“Please just call 911 if you see an animal in distress,” Swanson urged. “We’re here to help, and we can’t do it without you.”
The broadcast concluded with a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the ongoing commitment of local authorities to pursue justice for victims of animal cruelty.
