JAMAICA – Over 500 people have either suspected or confirmed to be infected with Dengue Type-2 infection. Of the 6 deaths, none have yet been confirmed to be infected with the disease. According to Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and Wellness, it’s National Surveillance Unit
“advised that Jamaica has surpassed the dengue epidemic threshold for July and August and is on a trajectory to do the same for the month of September.”
Other countries fighting the spread of this disease include Cuba, Taiwan, Peru, Brazil and a few other South American countries.
The World Health Organization says the highest number of suspected and confirmed cases of Dengue fever are in Peru, Brazil and Bolivia. Travel and trade resrictions have not been issued for these countries however.

Dengue fever is spread through infected mosquitos and spread to people via their bites. Specifically the Aedes spp. mosquitoes (especially Aedes aegypti). These insects can spread rapidly especially in areas of standing water such as water buckets, pools, animal feeding stations among other areas. The best way to combat these insects is to remove any areas that can hold standing water like old tires, keep water buckets empty when outside, make sure pools are cleaned regularly.
