Absentee Ballots at Risk After Post Box Break-In at Michigan Post Office

TWIN LAKE, Mich. — Election officials in Muskegon County are raising concerns after an incident at the Twin Lake Post Office over the weekend, where a post box break-in may have compromised some absentee ballots. The damage occurred between Saturday at 11 a.m. and Monday at 9 a.m., leaving clerks uncertain about the extent of mail that might be missing, including absentee ballots.

WZZM TV reports, Although the vandalized box was not a designated absentee ballot drop box, Blue Lake Township Clerk Jeff Abram expressed concerns after two residents reported their ballots had not been received by his office. Abram stated, “A voter came in saying he deposited his ballot in the Twin Lake post office box and wanted to know if I had it. I hadn’t received it.” Shortly after, a second individual made a similar report.

The U.S. Postal Service has yet to determine the volume or type of mail affected by the break-in. “I hope it’s not related to the ballots,” Abram added, noting the potential impact on election integrity.

Local clerks, including Abram, are urging any voter who placed their ballot in the Twin Lake post box to verify its status online or by contacting their clerk’s office. “We can quickly check the system to confirm whether we’ve received your ballot,” said Abram, emphasizing the urgency with Election Day approaching.

Blue Lake Township is seeing an increase in early in-person voting, which Abram attributes to Michigan’s new nine-day early voting window. However, absentee ballots remain a popular option, prompting officials to ensure voters have tools to verify ballot tracking.

For voters concerned about the status of their absentee ballots, Michigan offers tracking through the Michigan Voter Information Center. By providing basic information, voters can check key details such as the dates their absentee ballot application and ballot were received, and whether they’re on the permanent absentee list. The site also provides information about early voting, drop box locations, and election day voting.

With Election Day approaching, officials are focused on ensuring that every vote is counted.
