COLUMBIA, S.C. — Governor Henry McMaster has called for an investigation into allegations involving non-citizens receiving voter registration forms. The request was directed at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to meet with State Representative Adam Morgan.
Rep. Morgan, chair of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus, claims a non-citizen refugee provided evidence of receiving voter registration materials. According to Morgan, these forms were distributed by the South Carolina Medicaid Office.
The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 mandates that certain state offices, including those offering public assistance, must provide voter registration services. However, South Carolina law stipulates that only U.S. citizens are eligible to register to vote.
The South Carolina State Election Commission has not confirmed any incidents of non-citizens being fraudulently registered to vote.
The investigation was requested by Rep. Morgan and the Freedom Caucus, not directly by Governor McMaster, as earlier reports suggested.
