Grants Pass, Oregon – The Supreme Court Of The United States is set to hear arguments in the case of whether or not homeless people can be fined or jailed for sleeping outside. This sleepy Oregon town seems to be the battleground for a much larger, national debate on homelessness. Grants Pass Mayor Sara Bristol said that “It’s not the reason why I became mayor. And yet it has dominated every single thing that I’ve done for the last 3 1/2 years.”
The only homeless shelter in the area, the Gospel Rescue Mission. But due to the very stringent rules of the shelter, many choose not to stay. They do not allow smoking, drinking, drugs or pets. People also must attend Christian services everyday.
