In a bold move on Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott diverged from a recent Supreme Court decision, exploiting a legal loophole to employ razor wire at the state’s border wall. This action intensifies the ongoing clash between Abbott and the Biden Administration over border security.
The Supreme Court, in a narrow 5-4 ruling on Monday, granted U.S. Border Agents the authority to remove razor wire from the top of Texas’ border wall. However, the ruling did not explicitly prohibit Abbott from instructing the Texas National Guard to persist in laying the razor wire.

Taking advantage of this opening, Abbott released a statement on X on Wednesday, asserting that the federal government had faltered in safeguarding Texas from invasion, as mandated by Article IV Section 4 of the Constitution. He accused President Biden of disregarding Texas’ demand for the fulfillment of constitutional duties and invoked the state’s “constitutional authority to defend and protect itself.”
Abbott contended that this state authority “supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary.” The move is likely to further strain relations between Texas and the federal government on matters of border security.
Responding to Abbott’s actions, Representative Joaquin Castro (D-TX) posted on X, urging President Biden to take control of the Texas National Guard. Castro accused Abbott of using the state’s military force to obstruct and create chaos at the border.
The recent development marks the latest escalation in an ongoing battle between the state and federal governments in Texas over border policies. Earlier this month, members of the Texas National Guard had blocked access to a public park, impeding Border Patrol officials in their duties.
As tensions continue to rise, the conflict between Texas and the federal government on border control remains a focal point of national attention. The deployment of razor wire under the guise of state authority adds a new dimension to this contentious issue, setting the stage for potential legal and political confrontations in the days to come.
