ANN ARBOR, Mich – Early this morning, more than 30 student protesters staged demonstrations at the private residence of at least one University of Michigan (U-M) Board of Regents member, also targeting several other members’ homes. The protesters engaged in various activities, including placing tents and fake corpses wrapped in bloodied sheets on lawns, marching, chanting, and posting demands on doors.
The protesters concealed their identities by wearing masks. The following student groups claimed responsibility for the demonstrations on social media: Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) at the University of Michigan, Students Allied for Freedom and Equality (SAFE), and the Transparency, Accountability, Humanity, Reparations, Investment, Resistance (TAHRIR) Coalition. Additional social media posts from these groups reiterated their demands directed at the U-M Regents.
Law enforcement arrived on the scene, prompting the protesters to begin dispersing.
Today’s tactics mark a significant and dangerous escalation in the ongoing campus protests. Demonstrating at private residences constitutes intimidating behavior and, in this instance, illegal trespassing. This conduct is both dangerous and unacceptable” said the university in a statement.
