BURTON CITY, Mich. (AP) — A devastating incident involving a high-profile family shook Burton City and neighboring areas early this morning, leaving a trail of tragedy from Burton City to Vienna Township to Genesee Township.
At approximately 2:50 AM, law enforcement responded to a domestic disturbance call in Burton City, where a 27-year-old family member engaged in a verbal altercation before fleeing on foot. The situation escalated when the individual encountered their birth mother, leading to a tumultuous series of events.

As the mother was transporting the family member to their father’s residence in Vienna Township, the individual leaped from the moving vehicle. This prompted a confrontation between the father and son, resulting in gunfire that tragically claimed the life of Timothy Kildee, the brother of Congressman Dan Kildee.
Sheriff Chris Swanson, alongside Prosecutor David Leyton, addressed the media at the prosecutor’s office, shedding light on the unfolding tragedy. The suspect, believed to be the family member involved, sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized under guard. Meanwhile, the victim’s vehicle was stolen from the scene, leading to a subsequent collision in Genesee Township. Fortunately, the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash sustained only minor injuries.
Congressman Dan Kildee, who was informed of the incident while in Washington, is en route back to Michigan with his family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time.
While the investigation remains ongoing, preliminary charges under consideration include open murder, carjacking, armed robbery, and firearm-related offenses. Further updates on charges will be provided as the investigation progresses.
