New poll finds 4 in 10 California residents are considering packing up and leaving

LOS ANGELES, Calif-   According to  The 2023 California Community Poll people want out of California.

The current survey was conducted from June 6-16, 2023 among 1354 California residents. Key findings include:

  • Californians face deep economic anxieties
  • Despite the financial strain, most residents are happy living in California – and the state’s diversity is a central reason why.
  • The inequities and challenges facing women and communities of color have not gone away

I  talked to a woman who moved out of Northern California because of taxes, crime, inflation, and politics.

According to the moving company Pods, people are leaving the state because of the continued increasingly high costs of living, housing, and transportation coupled with an increase in crime, pollution, and congestion has caused many people to relocate to more affordable cities and states. Businesses have also been on the move out of California.

So why are so many people leaving California? To put it plainly, the number one reason is that California is expensive. The state consistently ranks in the top five of the most expensive states in the country. According to Zillow, between 2015 and 2022, the average home value increased 92 percent, nearly doubling. Increasingly high costs of living, housing, and transportation coupled with an increase in crime, pollution, and congestion has caused many people to relocate to more affordable cities and states.

Businesses have also been on the move out of California. A 2022 report by the Hoover Institution shows 352 businesses leaving California and moving their headquarters to a different state between 2018 and 2022. High rent, high taxes, high costs of living for employees, and red tape are just a few reasons why.
