Michigan Taxpayers could Be On The Hook for $250 Million in Controversial Mundy Township Megasite Project

MUNDY TWP, Mich – Mundy Township, Michigan, is seeking $250 million from the state to develop a megasite on over 1,000 acres near Bishop Airport to attract a high-tech manufacturer. This request follows a recent $9.2 million approval by the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) Board for site readiness activities. Although no specific user has been identified, officials state the site is equipped with the necessary infrastructure and is ideal for advanced manufacturing.

Below is an agenda from the Michigan Strategic Fund for the Tuesday, May 21 meeting. The agenda item says, “Advanced Manufacturing District: A resolution to approve a Strategic Site Readiness Program grant for the Flint and Genesee Group Foundation in the amount of $250,000,000.

This vast 1,000-acre lot is called a “Mega-Site” between Elms Road, Linden Road, West Hill Road, and Maple Road in Mundy Twp, Michigan.

What’s not known is whether any business has agreed to set up shop on the land. Mundy Twp. has been controverted over what some say is a lack of transparency regarding this project and public funding.

In a previous interview, Mundy Township Manager Chad Young said before any business would go into that land, there would be public meetings where residents could voice their opposition to or support any plans.

Late last year, ABC 12 reported, the parent company of Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler rejected a $1 billion incentive package from Michigan before deciding to locate the multi-billion plant in Indiana, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

The publication says the Mundy Township mega site near Bishop International Airport was among four places offered to Stellantis in Michigan.

As I learn more information I will update this story.
