McLaren Health Care dealing with what employees say is a computer nightmare

FLINT, Mich – McLaren Health Care said it’s experiencing technological issues that are causing disruption. Dozens of workers tell Dave Bondy the company is publicly downplaying the problem.

The company released the following statement:

While McLaren Health Care continues to investigate a disruption to our information technology system, we want to ensure our teams are as prepared as possible to care for patients when they arrive.
Patients with scheduled appointments should plan to attend those appointments unless they are contacted by a member of our care team. Out of an abundance of caution, some non-emergent or elective procedures may be rescheduled. Our team will work diligently with any patient who has an appointment rescheduled.
During this disruption, we are also requesting patients bring any of the following information they may have to their appointments:
1. A list of current medications or empty prescription bottles
2. Printed physician orders for imaging studies or treatments
3. Printed results of recent lab tests
– McLaren Health Care – patient portal: https://mclarenhealthcare.org/3SFS881
– Karmanos – patient portal: https://mclarenhealthcare.org/3SDoPms
4. A list of allergies
We understand this situation may be frustrating to our patients – and to our team members – and we deeply and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We kindly ask for your patience while our caregivers and support teams work as diligently as ever to provide our communities the care they need and deserve.

The company did not say what caused the problem.

A McLaren employee sent me the following comment, ” The issues are with the entire network throughout the entire health system. Every McLaren hospital, every McLaren doctor office and every satellite office of any sort is affected. No phones or computers are operational, including cell phones and pagers/beepers. Everything is now pen and paper when all records are electronic and can not be accessed. We can’t even access our email on our personal phones. They have no information to provide to the staff and have no idea of when things will be operational again.”

Mary Owczykowski on Facebook commented, “All prepped and in operating room when computers went down for a family member for an 8 hr heart surgery, had to be cancelled..waited for anesthesia to wear off and sent home Mon morning.”

Tim Lane commented on Facebook saying, “The computers were down when my wife had her doctor’s appointment this morning.”

Nickie Oates Trevino wrote on Facebook: “I am in the hospital right now. They are getting things under control was all prepped and ready for my surgery but now it is canceled, but our nurses are doing the best they can.”
