Man charged with stealing tax-returns from IRS

(CNN)- A 38 year old man has been charged with stealing tax returns of a government official.  Charles Edward Littlejohn, a contractor with the IRS, faces charges of stealing the tax returns of Donald Trump and other high profile persons. “Littlejohn is charged with one count of unauthorized disclosure of tax returns and return information and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

The tax returns and other related documents were leaked to The New York Times and ProPublica.  Both of whom published articles about the individuals from 2020 and 2021.  Both news organizations have not been named in any court documents as they have not been accused of any wrongdoing.

An attorney for the defendant was not available for comment.

“The outlets are not named in charging documents, but the description and time frame align with stories about former President Donald Trump’s tax returns in The New York Times and reporting about wealthy Americans’ taxes in the nonprofit investigative journalism organization ProPublica.”

The two news organizations say that the information they received were tax returns and other documents that went back at least 15 years.
