Man accused of killing 2-year-old Michigan girl was let out of prison two years early

LANSING, Mich – The family of two-year-old Wynter Cole Smith is demanding Michigan lawmakers and Governor Gretchen Whitmer do more to keep violent offenders in prison.

Police say Rashad Maleek Trice kidnapped and murdered the precious two-year-old. Wyner’s body was found in a Detroit alley on Wednesday evening.

Trice had been released from state prison in January 2022.

He was not scheduled to be released from prison until January 2024.

Trice was convicted of the following charges:

  • Resisting police
  • assault with a dangerous weapon
  • fleeing a police officer
  • assault on a police officer

Wynter’s family released the following statement:

“In remembering Wynter, we belive this is necessary to help make sure that this kind of tragedy never again touches another family, Anywhere. We ask the State Legislature and Governor Whitmer to consider legislation that further ensures that multiple violent offenders remain in jail or prison as they are tragically a threat to all of us.”

Trice was charged earlier this week with kidnapping 2-year-old Wynter Cole Smith and is facing eight felonies, including assault with intent to murder and first-degree criminal sexual conduct, in connection with an attack on Wynter’s mother.

Investigators say more charges are pending following the discovery of the child’s body.
