In a dramatic turn of events on Thursday, January 18, 2024, Motor Carrier Officer (MCO) Kammeron Bennetts of the Michigan State Police emerged as a hero when he responded to a distress call involving a 65-year-old Traverse City man who had fallen through the ice on Arbutus Lake in East Bay Township.

Bystanders, witnessing the chilling incident, promptly dialed 911, setting off a chain of events that would highlight the bravery of MCO Bennetts and the loyalty of a four-legged friend named Ruby.

Upon arriving at the scene around 11:45 a.m., MCO Bennetts wasted no time taking control of the situation. Armed with a rescue disc from his patrol vehicle, he ventured onto the frozen lake. However, challenging ice conditions prevented him from reaching the stranded man.

Thinking on his feet, MCO Bennetts called upon Ruby, the man’s loyal dog, for assistance. With quick thinking and cooperation, MCO Bennetts attached the rescue disc to Ruby’s collar, instructing the man to call his dog over. Ruby, understanding the urgency, ran to MCO Bennetts with the disc.

The dramatic rescue unfolded as MCO Bennetts guided the man in distress to use the disc and kick his legs. The efforts were further supported by a firefighter from the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, culminating in the successful extraction of the man from the icy waters.

The victim, who had spent approximately 16 minutes in the freezing water, was promptly transported by ambulance to Munson Medical Center for necessary treatment. Fortunately, he was later released, thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the rescue team.

The collaborative response involved multiple agencies, including East Bay Township EMS, Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, and Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department.

This heartwarming tale of heroism and camaraderie serves as a reminder of the selfless dedication of our emergency responders, whose quick thinking and teamwork can make all the difference in the face of adversity.
