City officials are reminding residents of the relevant city ordinance, § 96.29, which outlines the responsibilities of property owners concerning sidewalk maintenance. According to the ordinance:
(A) Liability of Property Owner: It is the responsibility of property owners and occupants of lots or premises adjacent to or abutting sidewalks to maintain them in good repair, safe for pedestrian use, and free of hazards. Property owners are obligated to cover the expenses of repairs, maintenance, and ensuring freedom from hazards. This includes filling cracks, hollows, or crevices with concrete, removing weeds or vegetation, and addressing any condition that poses a hazard to pedestrians.
(B) Consequences of Non-Compliance: Failure, neglect, or refusal of a property owner to keep the sidewalk in good repair or maintain it as required by the ordinance constitutes a misdemeanor. Upon conviction, property owners may face penalties as outlined in § 96.99. Additionally, property owners may be held liable to the city for any injuries or damages resulting from unsafe or inadequately maintained sidewalks.
City officials are urging residents to be proactive in adhering to these guidelines to ensure the safety of all pedestrians and to prevent the need for law enforcement to issue tickets. The police department aims to maintain a safe environment for the community and appreciates the cooperation of residents in achieving this goal.
The city ordinance (Ord. 182, passed 12-16-91; Am. Ord. 225, passed 8-15-05) can be referenced for more details, including penalties associated with non-compliance (see § 96.99).
Residents are encouraged to promptly address snow-covered sidewalks to prevent potential hazards and contribute to the overall safety of the community. Cooperation from all members of the community is vital to maintaining Gladwin as a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
