DETROIT, MICH – A strong winter storm system is set to impact various regions across the United States:

- Extremely cold Arctic air spreading southward through the weekend.
- Moderate to heavy snowfall in the Pacific Northwest, Great Basin, and Northern Rockies, even at lower elevations.

- Southeast/East Coast:
- Coastal flooding, severe weather, and heavy rain anticipated.
- Active weather pattern due to an energetic jet stream and multiple storm systems.
- Enhanced Risk (level 3/5) of severe weather in the ArkLaTex with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes likely Thursday night.
- Additional Enhanced Risk for Mid-South on Friday with concerns about damaging winds and tornadoes.
- Mid-Atlantic and New England:
- Another round of heavy rain expected, increasing flood risk in urban areas.
- Slight Risk (level 2/4) of excessive rainfall.
- Gusty winds and coastal flooding concerns from the Mid-Atlantic into New England.
- Northern Plains/Central Plains/Mississippi Valley/Southern Plains:
- Bitterly cold Arctic air follows the storm system.
- Record low temperatures forecast, reaching as low as -40 in the Northern Plains on Saturday morning.
- Dangerously cold wind chills (-35 to -50) may cause frostbite within minutes.
- Temperatures remaining below zero for the Northern Plains and single digits for the Central Plains.
- Great Lakes:
- Swath of moderate to heavy snow expected from Middle Missouri Valley to Great Lakes.
- Blizzard conditions possible with strong, gusty winds (40 to 50 mph).
- Lake-effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes, continuing through Saturday.
- West Coast:
- Colder air following a frontal boundary brings heavy snow to the Pacific Northwest, northern Great Basin, and Northern Rockies.
- Winter Storm Watches/Warnings for lower elevations, including Portland and Boise.
