BENONA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – In the early hours of this morning, at approximately 1:54 a.m., a dramatic rescue operation unfolded at Camp Ao Wa Kiya in Benona Township, Oceana County. Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Hart Post, in coordination with the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, were dispatched to the scene after a tree fell on a cabin.
The cabin, located in the 8400 block of W. Thomas Street, was occupied by about 12 young campers, all girls in the 3rd to 5th grade, and two adult counselors. One of the counselors became trapped when the tree crashed into the cabin, pinning her to her bed.

Upon arrival, troopers began the arduous task of removing debris and shattered glass from a broken window to reach the trapped counselor. After approximately an hour and a half, the counselor was successfully freed from the wreckage.
Remarkably, the rescued counselor emerged from the destroyed cabin unharmed and appeared to be in good health. During the operation, one of the responding troopers sustained a minor hand injury and received treatment at a local hospital.
The quick response and teamwork of the MSP Hart Post and Oceana County Sheriff’s Office were crucial in ensuring the safety of all individuals involved.
