In a targeted enforcement action, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Newark apprehended a Colombian fugitive on December 27, 2023. The individual, sentenced to 22 years for murder in 2011, had failed to return from a furlough in 2018. The arrest was made with the assistance of U.S. Customs and Border Protection of New York/Newark.

The Colombian noncitizen, who unlawfully entered the U.S., faces removal proceedings and remains in ICE custody. ERO Newark confirmed on January 10 that the subject is wanted in Colombia to complete his prison sentence. Previously arrested for assault and making terroristic threats in New Jersey, the individual will undergo legal due process in immigration courts.
In fiscal year 2022, ERO arrested 46,396 noncitizens with criminal histories, including those with charges like assault, sex offenses, weapons offenses, homicides, and kidnappings. ERO, part of ICE, focuses on domestic immigration enforcement to protect U.S. communities and uphold immigration laws. The agency’s workforce comprises over 7,700 personnel across the nation and overseas.
