CHESANING, Mich – The Chesaning, Michigan Police Department has eliminated it’s K9 program.
Police Chief Troy Meder tells Keeping it Real Digital, “The K9 program was eliminated as a result of an exhaustive cost/benefit analysis that I conducted. There was no documentation or evidence of the K9 being used for any legitimate law enforcement purposes over the last year. There is cost to the agency in man hours and equipment that outweighs the usefulness of the K9. There was a bite incident, but it was not factored in to my decision.”
Some people in the the community have asked me what will happen to the donations given to the K-9 program.
Chief Meder responded to that question” I have checked with our accounting department and there is no record of any money coming in to the village from these alleged donations. There was money raised on the front end of the program to purchase the dog and get it through its initial training, but nothing since then.,” said Chief Meder.
Chief Meder tells me there was also an incident where the K-9 bit a person. Meder says a family member of the previous chief was the person who was bit and happened at her home.
