BURTON, Mich – Several residents tell me they will be attending the Burton, Michigan City Council meeting to speak out on a controversy involving the police department and Police Chief Brian Ross.
At a meeting on July 3, Burton City Council voted to approve an independent investigation into allegations surrounding Chief Ross.
The Burton Command Officers previously released a memo showing a no-confidence vote in the chief.
The memo said in part, “Over the last several years, we have been disappointed by Chief Ross’ actions and his management of our police department. Chief Ross has broken our trust and confidence. Under his leadership, the morale of the officers within our department has plummeted to depths we have not seen before.”
At a recent meeting, a resident spoke out in support of Chief Ross.
According to MLIVE, Ross has been under investigation since early May for allegations of misconduct.
Dave Bondy has also learned several police officers have indicated they would leave the department if the city administration does not remove Chief Ross from his job.
Burton Mayor Duane Haskins also spoke at a previous meeting saying the chief has been cleared of any wrongdoing as part of an investigation and that any further investigations would be a waste of money.
One resident did speak out opposing Chief Ross at the July 3 meeting calling for more transparency.
At this time there is nothing on the agenda for Monday’s council meeting pertaining to the investigation, but it’s expected that several residents will speak about the issue during public comment.
According to WNEM-TV, Chief Ross said the pushback from some officers is due to changes at the department that led to the demotion and the resignation of two officers and criminal charges against two others.
