President Biden is set to announce a significant immigration program at the White House on Tuesday. The program, called “Parole in Place,” will grant legal status and a streamlined path to U.S. residency and citizenship to around 500,000 unauthorized immigrants married to American citizens. Eligible immigrants must have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years and meet other requirements, including being legally married to a U.S. citizen by June 17.

This announcement coincides with the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, initiated by President Obama to protect “Dreamers” from deportation. Although a federal judge in Texas ruled DACA unlawful last year, preventing new applications, the new program aims to provide a similar level of protection and opportunity.

First lady Jill Biden highlighted the importance of this program by sharing the story of families who have lived in the U.S. for over a decade but face uncertainty due to their immigration status. The new program will also make it easier for employers to sponsor “Dreamers” and other undocumented immigrants for work visas.

If upheld in court, this initiative would be the largest government effort to protect undocumented migrants since DACA, offering a pathway to permanent residency and U.S. citizenship for many beneficiaries. However, those who pose a threat to national security or public safety will be excluded from the program.
