Employees and patients describe chaos at Ascension Health Following Cyberattack

DETROIT, Mich –  A massive cyberattack on Ascension Health has compromised the sensitive data of millions of patients and employees hit last week .The breach exposed personal information, including medical records and financial details, prompting the health system to enhance its cybersecurity measures.

I am told due to the hack some employees are now being sent home and aren’t being told when to come back to work.

These are justs some of the messages I have received from Ascension employees:

” It has affected our timekeeping system, security cameras, and our paging system for MDs in some states. Our locks have been locking and unlocking at random times without employees doing anything, call light systems cannot send any electronic prescriptions, and our zone phones to call one another have been having issues. This most likely means we will be working with paper charts for months. “
“I work at ascension in a southern state. It’s scary how chaotic it is. It’s been terrible. But they tell the media that we are trained for this and everything is going great. I’d stay away from ascension as a patient until this is over. It feels very dangerous.”

The company released the following statement:

We continue to diligently investigate and address the recent ransomware incident, working closely with industry leading cybersecurity experts to assist in our investigation and restoration and recovery efforts. Additionally, we have notified law enforcement, as well as government partners including the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the American Hospital Association (AHA). We remain in close contact with the FBI and CISA, and we are sharing relevant threat intelligence with the Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center (H-ISAC) so that our industry partners and peers can take steps to protect themselves from similar incidents.

While our restoration work continues in earnest, our focus is on restoring systems as safely as possible. While we expect this process will take time to complete, we are making progress and systems are being restored in a coordinated manner at each of our care sites. We will continue to share updates on our recovery process.
