Why I Left TV News to Go Independent

After 25 years in mainstream media as a reporter and anchor, I made the difficult decision to leave television news and pursue independent journalism. It wasn’t a decision I took lightly, but it became clear to me that if I wanted to stay true to the values that brought me into this field, I needed to chart a new path.

Throughout my career, I had the privilege of working with some truly amazing people—journalists, producers, photographers, and editors—whose dedication to their craft inspired me daily. These are people who care deeply about the truth and work tirelessly to keep the public informed. But over time, I began to see how even the best journalists can be constrained by the demands of corporate interests, advertiser influence, and the relentless pursuit of ratings.

Journalism, at its core, should be about holding the powerful accountable, asking tough questions, and reporting stories that matter to the community. But as I worked within the system, I saw critical stories get watered down, sidelined, or abandoned altogether—not because they lacked merit, but because they didn’t fit the format or might upset someone in power. Complex stories were condensed into short segments, with nuance sacrificed for simplicity.

Instead of digging deeper into the issues that impact people’s lives—like censorship, corruption, and government accountability—newsrooms often shifted focus to stories that could generate clicks or fit neatly into the 24-hour news cycle. It became harder to serve the public the way I had always intended, and that was something I could no longer accept.

The decision to leave wasn’t about frustration with my colleagues. Many of them are still in the fight, doing their best under difficult circumstances, and I admire them for it. But I wanted more freedom to tell stories on my own terms, without the constraints of corporate agendas or advertiser pressure. Going independent allows me to focus on the topics I believe matter most—stories that might not make the evening news but still deserve to be told.

Stepping into independent journalism hasn’t been easy, but it’s been deeply rewarding. It allows me to engage with my audience directly, without filters or intermediaries. I’m able to explore issues in depth, ask questions others might shy away from, and report the truth even when it’s inconvenient. I can now cover stories with the kind of integrity, transparency, and fairness that first drew me to this profession.

In today’s media landscape, trust in the press is eroding, and people are looking for alternatives—sources they can believe in. That’s what I aim to offer through my work as an independent journalist. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I’m committed to pursuing the truth, even when it challenges popular narratives or makes people uncomfortable.

This journey has given me a renewed sense of purpose. It’s about getting back to the heart of journalism—telling stories that matter, giving people a voice, and shining a light where it’s needed most. I couldn’t have made this transition without the incredible support I’ve received from followers, readers, and subscribers. Knowing that people value honest, independent reporting motivates me to keep going.

I left television news not because I stopped believing in journalism, but because I believe it can still make a difference—just not within the confines of the mainstream system. Thank you to everyone who has joined me on this journey. Together, we can cut through the noise, seek out the truth, and, most importantly, keep it real.
