NEW YORK, NY – The NY Post is reporting, a man suspected in the targeted killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was apprehended Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, according to law enforcement sources. Thompson, 50, was shot multiple times outside the Hilton on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan last week in what authorities have described as a calculated attack.
Thompson, who was set to speak at an investor conference, was ambushed on the sidewalk by a masked assailant armed with a handgun fitted with a silencer. Surveillance footage captured the chilling moment the gunman approached Thompson from behind, opened fire, and fled the scene on an e-bike. Thompson was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigation Details
The incident triggered an intense manhunt, during which investigators uncovered peculiar details, including bullets inscribed with words like “deny,” “depose,” and “defend.” These phrases echoed criticisms of the health insurance industry’s practices. Video evidence revealed the suspect’s face and linked him to an Upper West Side hostel where he reportedly stayed before the shooting.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Thompson, a father of two, was deliberately targeted. His wife, Paulette Thompson, disclosed that the family had received threats related to his leadership of the nation’s largest private health insurer. “There had been some threats,” she told NBC News, speculating that they were tied to complaints about insurance coverage.
A High-Stakes Mystery
The suspect’s arrest comes amid continued questions about the motive behind the killing. Law enforcement sources revealed that UnitedHealthcare had notified authorities about threats against Thompson prior to his death. The NYPD and CrimeStoppers had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Community and Industry React
Thompson had served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, earning praise from colleagues and industry leaders. UnitedHealth Group released a statement expressing shock and grief: “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also mourned the loss, calling it a “horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota.”
Flags at the company’s headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota, were flown at half-staff in honor of Thompson.
Ongoing Investigation
The suspect remains in custody, and authorities are investigating whether additional charges or connections will emerge. Meanwhile, the case has sparked broader discussions about security and transparency in corporate leadership amid growing public tensions over health care policies.
